this was a much less emotionally "intense" performance than the show I saw in Manchester last year. There was even a bit of levity at one point when Fernando almost chuckled during 1 song.

It seemed to take Lou and band a couple of songs to get into their stride, but once they did, it was great. Lou didn't play much lead guitar this time - most of the licks were left to Steve Hunter and Mike R. Thankfully, Fernando's vocal input to the "Berlin" section of the show was minimal (the downside was that he sung most of "Satellite"......)

encores were Satellite, Rock And Roll and Power Of The Heart

afterwards, Lou came out at the stage door and was exceptionally friendly - he walked slowly down the line of fans, signing stuff and even posing for photos (this is very unusual in my experience - he does not normally allow you to take any "candid" pics of him.)

Lou looked every inch the 66 year-old man he is - when I see him close up I wonder just how much longer he'll be able to do this sort of thing.

I think my recording of the show came out ok but I didn't get the encores. However I know at least 3 other minidisc recordings were being made - between us I'm sure we got the whole thing.

Did Rock n Roll have an extended funk outro by Steve Hunter like in the old days? Probably not :D

now up on dime!

Lou Reed Edinburgh 25 June 2008 incomplete audience recording

Playhouse Theatre
Edinburgh
25 June 2008

01: Sad Song/Berlin 4.07
02: Lady Day 6.17
03: Men Of Good Fortune 7.55
04: Caroline Says 1 4.45
05: How Do You Think It Feels? 6.19

Lou Reed: guitar, vocals
Steve Hunter: guitar
Mike Rathke: guitar
Rob Wasserman: bass
Fernando Saunders: bass, backing vocals
Tony "Thunder" Smith: drums
Rupert ? : keyboards
???: vocals
brass section
children's choir

lineage: SONY MZ-R91 minidisc recorder/Toshiba tieclip mic - (Wavepad) - wav - flac (level 8) - you

recorded from Row C seat 34

This was my 3rd "Berlin" show (after Brooklyn 2006 and Manchester 2007), and I don't think that it had the sheer emotional intensity of the other 2. The band's entrance was very low-key: they simply wandered on to the stage about 30 mins late and put on their instruments. Lou appeared, and when everyone was ready, the choir just launched right into "Sad Song". The whole band were a bit hesitant for the first couple of songs, but then they seemed to find a groove and it was very tight from then onwards. Lou played very little lead guitar, but his voice held up well. Steve Hunter was superb (I've often wondered how Mike Rathke feels now - shunted off to the side playing rhythm guitar in-fills while Steve takes all the good solos...). Rob Wasserman was unobtrusively excellent and Fernando was Fernando. Tony was, as always, thunderous.

I dont know what I did wrong but my recorder switched off after 30 minutes. I have 3 friends who were all recording this show - one of them is bound to have captured it all. As soon as I get a complete copy I'll upload it (if someone else doesn't get there first).

The encores were : "Satellite Of Love", "Rock And Roll" and "Power Of The Heart".

included with torrent files:
1. scan of ticket
2. exterior view of venue
3. advertising outside venue

After the show a small crowd of fans gathered at the stage door. About an hour later, security made us form an orderly queue and said Lou would be out shortly. Sure enough, out he came, wearing a black baseball cap and looking very small and fragile. He slowly walked down the queue, shaking hands, signing things and even posing for photos! In all the times I've seen Lou I have NEVER seen him so friendly and willing to talk. I've also never seen him looking so old - he really does look like the 66 year old man he is. I wonder how much longer he'll be able to keep this up.....

Distribute widely but do not sell!
Give copies to all your friends!

I've wondered that too...especially after the Durham show, when Lou was introducing the band at the end, he just said "Mike Rathke on guitar" but said all kinds of glowing things about Hunter when introducing him.

No worries...............
I think you will find that Mike is completely cool with the situation, he and Steve are great friends and have worked together on how to approach the Berlin show with the two guitars, there is great respect on both sides.

This version of How do You Think it Feels (as well as the one of Cork) is breathtaking.
And his voice is perfect !!
Can't wait to see this Berlin again !
There's a bit of magic in everything
and then some loss to even things out

I've been reading a couple of reports like these of late.
At first I tended to dismis them, but since they are becoming more and more common I'm starting to worry about our dearest guy.
A very hasty marriage to Laurie Anderson, cancelling parts of the tour in Spain for 'health problems', numerous eye witness reports of people seeing Lou in poor condition, ... what is happening? :???:
